Domain Name Registration
- Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a domain
name?
A domain name is simply a
system for providing a human-memorable
name for a particular computer
on the Internet, in essence
your online identity. It is
the address your customers
use to find information about
your products and services
on the web. Simply speaking,
computers have numerical addresses,
sort of like a phone number.
The domain name system provides
a translation from a name
to the appropriate number
(sort of a directory assistance
for the Internet). Domain
names allow Internet users
to type in a name, to identify
a specific numeric Internet
Protocol (IP) address. The
purpose of domain names is
to allow users connected to
the Internet the ability to
find web sites without having
to memorize the long, numerical
(IP) addresses that actually
locate the computers or servers
on the Internet. For example,
www.outstanding.info is much
easier to type and remember
than 216.148.221.150.

- Why do I want a
domain name?
There are several advantages
to having a domain name: Your
web service and e-mail addresses
can be consistent (e.g., www.outstanding.info
and me@outstanding.info). A
domain name is shorter and
more memorable than a URL
under your ISP's domain name
e.g., www.outstanding.info
vs. www.anotherlong-absurd-bannersite.com/outstanding/.../)
Most importantly: You have
the freedom to move your web
hosting and e-mail at will
from one Internet Service
Provider to another without
having to change your URL
and email addresses. If your
URL is www.anotherlong-absurd-bannersite.com/outstanding/.../,
you have to be a customer
of www.anotherlong-absurd-bannersite.com.
If you become unhappy with
the service you are getting
and want to switch, you'll
have to change your URL and
email, throwing away all the
work you did you publicize
the first ones. If you have
your own domain name, you're
not stuck (more about this
in the domain management FAQ).

- What does it mean
to "Register" a domain name?
There is a central registry
of all domain names on the
Internet. For your domain
name to become a part of the
registry, your domain name
needs to be added to that
registry. "Registering" a
domain name means you are
associated with that domain
name for the period of the
registration. "Registering"
a name means you own it, and
no one else can register that
exact same name!

- Who should register
a domain name?
Anyone thinking about establishing
a presence on the Internet
should register a domain name.
You don't have to utilize
it right away, but you can
reserve it for your future
use. Domains are being registered
at the rate of 1,000,000 per
month.
[Top]
- How long does the
registration process take?
OUTSTANDING.COM 's application
process takes less than two
minutes to complete. All registrations
take place in real time- once
your application has been
processed and approved, your
name is registered.
[Top]
- Is it possible for
someone to register my domain
after I have registered it?
No. The availability of .com,
, .info, .net , .org and .biz
domain names is verified through
a central registry system.
This system prevents a domain
name that is successfully
registered from being registered
by another person or entity.
The Outstanding.com registration
and processing system updates
the central registry in real
time.

- What methods of
payment does OUTSTANDING.COM

- If a domain name
is already registered, can
I find out who owns the name?
Yes. If you check the availability
of a domain name and it is
already registered, click
on the whois search link.
This will display the contact
information associated with
a registered domain name.

- Who do I contact
for additional assistance?
If you have any questions
or comments you can email
us at support@outstanding.info.

- I've got my domain
name, now what?
There are many uses for your
new domain name. Some people
want to have a personal or
business website; others want
to establish an email address;
and still others want to hold
onto their domain for future
use or sale. If you would
like to have a Website, contact
support@outstanding.info or
simply contact your Web hosting
company or Internet Service
Provider (ISP). They will
build your Website and supply
you with their Domain Name
Server Information (DNS info).
Then, visit OUTSTANDING.COM
and enter the DNS information
in the "Manage" section. Within
24-48 hours after you enter
the DNS info., your new Website
will be accessible to anyone
in the world. It's that simple!
If you would like to establish
an email account, your Internet
Service Provider (ISP) will
give you their DNS info. Simply
go to OUTSTANDING.COM and
enter the DNS info in the
"Manage" section of the web
site. Your ISP can then route
email sent to your new domain
to either a new or existing
mail box on their servers.
If you would like to resell
your domain name, you may
transfer the domain to a new
buyer by using the "Ownership
Change" form in the "Manage"
section of the Website.

- I own a new domain,
but when I type it into my
browser, nothing comes up.
A domain name is not a website.
It's simply an address someone
uses to find a website. If
you would like to have a website
contact webservices@outstanding.info
or, you can contact a web
design or hosting company.
After they build you a Website,
you can enter their Domain
Name Server Info (DNS Info)
by clicking on the outstanding.info"Manage"
link. Within 24-48 hours after
you enter the DNS info, your
new Website will be accessible
to anyone in the world to
see, including you!

- I want to register
a domain, but it's not available,
even though it's expired.
Domains that expire at OUTSTANDING.COM
are released after their term
expires. Please remember when
looking at a domain's expiration
date that the format is Month/Day/Year-
MM/DD/YEAR. Domains that expire
at another registrar are subject
to their own policies. They
do vary from registrar to
registrar, however, there
are some consistencies. There
is usually a grace period,
and then a period when the
domain is "on hold"- where
nobody can do anything with
it. Generally, you will need
to give a domain at least
30 days from the time of expiration
to be released. You cannot
put in any kind of "pre-claim"
on the name. You'll have to
wait until it is released
by the registrar, and then
register it manually. Lately,
Network Solutions has adopted
the policy of not releasing
domain names. If a name expires
at Network Solutions, they
will require it to be re-registered
at NSI. For a registrar's
specific release policy, you
should contact the registrar
that owns the name. You can
find out who is the registrar
for a specific name by entering
the name into the central
database search engine at
http://www.internic.net/whois.html.
[Top]
- I tried to register/transfer
a domain, and it didn't go
through, was it charged?
When you attempt to make a
purchase in our credit card
system, we "authorize" funds
on your credit card. This
is not a charge, but a test
to see if you have the funds
available for the purchase.
After the authorization returns
a result of sufficient funds,
we attempt to register the
domain(s). If the domain registration
fails for any reason, there
will be a void that accompanies
the attempted charge. The
net result is that there will
be no charge that posts to
your account. There is still,
though, that authorization
on your credit card. This
authorization looks like a
charge, and will reduce your
available credit, but will
expire on its own within a
few days on most cards. Some
card systems, notably debit
cards and PayPal cards (because
they both deal with your bank
account) hang on to authorizations
longer. You should contact
your credit provider for the
specific authorization policy.
It is for this reason that
we recommend contacting technical
support if you are having
trouble registering a domain.
If you continue to submit
time after time, you will
rack up a large number of
authorizations, and may run
out of available credit or
freeze your account. You may
even cause your credit card
company to suspect fraud,
and they will put a hold on
your card.
[Top]
- What is a CVV2 number?
CVV2 is a security measure
we require for all transactions.
Since a CVV2 number is listed
on your credit card, but is
not stored anywhere, the only
way to know the correct CVV2
number for your credit card
is to physically have possession
of the card itself. All VISA,
MasterCard and American Express
cards made in America in the
past 5 years or so have a
CVV2 number, while those in
Europe and Asia will be joining
the CVV2 program shortly.
If you have any other questions
about your CVV2 number, please
contact your bank or credit
card issuer.
